Introduction
Exacerbations of asthma are among the most common causes of hospitalization and outpatient visits, particularly among children and adolescents. Inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy is the mainstay for asthma in all but the very mildest of cases. However, ICS use needs to be maintained on a continuous basis, even when symptoms are not troublesome -- otherwise, relapses are likely to occur resulting in repeat doctor and emergency department visits; hospitalization; or, in severe cases, death.
